One important thing to remember about cheating in relationships is that men and women view cheating differently. The reasons men cheat and the reasons women cheat are very different. Also, the way men and women react to cheating differs greatly as well.

To understand this, it is important to look back into human psychology. Back in cavemen times, sex was mainly rooted in procreation. Of course, physical drives were present as they are now, but its root is in procreation.

A man has a desire to ’spread his seed’ by impregnating many different women. This allows him to spread his genes the furthest and to have the most babies. Why do men do this you ask? It’s quite simple. Men who had the urge to spread their seed did so, and because they did so, most men who are now alive have that urge do to! The men who did not want to ’spread their seed’ had their genes die off, whereas the men who ’spread their seed’ now have many descendants.

While men had the urge to impregnate many women, the man also had only so many resources to devote towards his offspring. Therefore, he would choose the ones he loved the most (mainly the woman he cared about the most) and would focus on them. It did not hurt the man to have offspring with random women whom he did not focus on; it was a bonus. However, he improved the chances of the kids he cared about the most.

Women have a different view towards mating. Unlike men, there is no advantage to ’spreading their seed.’ A woman can have a finite amount of children since she can only be pregnant with one man’s baby at a time. Thus, while men can potentially have thousands of offspring, women can only have a few dozen max.

Therefore, it is important to the woman that the men who impregnates her will look after her and care about her. Back in the cavemen times, there was no child support or family welfare programs. If the man who impregnated her abandoned her, there was a good chance her and her child would not survive. Thus, for a woman, it is important that the man places her as the most important.

Because of their caveman roots, ,men view relationships largely physically. To him, a woman cheats on him if she is physical with another man. Whether or not his wife/girlfriend loves the other man is not so much the issue as whether she has been in bed with him.

Think about it in caveman terms. If a woman cheats on a man physically, it may mean that she is carrying another man’s child. Thus, if he devotes his life and resources to her, it may not be to his child. This is bad for the man’s genes. Men who did this sort of thing would see their genetic line die off. Therefore, a man would care more that a woman is not physical with any other man, more so than her not loving or caring about anyone else.

For a woman though, it is different. She is more concerned with the emotional aspects of cheating. The cavewoman in her is more concerned that her man places her first. To her, it is not so bad if her man ’spreads his seed’ around as long as it is abundantly clear that he cares about her and places her #1 above all other women. Nevertheless, it is dificult to determine this, which is why women will react negatively to the thought of her man in any sort of relationship with another woman.

A good way to think about this is to imagine your partner cheating on you with a prostitute. For a woman, it is often disgusting to think of her man as cheating on her with a prostitute. However, health issues aside, one stray is not necessarily a deal breaker for all women. This is because the woman knows that her man has no emotional attachment to the prostitute. It would be much more worse for the woman if her man cheated on her with say, a close friend whom he now loves.

However, for a man, the thought of his wife having a one night stand is just as bad, if not worse, than her having a full fledged affair. This is because the chance of him being ‘cuckold,’ meaning his wife is carrying another man’s child without him knowing it.

While we often think of cheating in the same terms, mainly a physical act with another person outside of a relationship, it is important to understand how both sides view the matter. The reasons men cheat, and the way they react to cheating, is largely the result of the physical side of cheating. In contrast, women are more concerned with the emotional side of cheating.
